Kerala HC Stays Lakswadeep’s Beef, Chicken Removal Order Until Further Notice

The Kerala High Court on Tuesday stayed the two controversial orders issued by the Lakshadweep administration.

Kerala High Court Stays Beef, Chicken Removal Order

In a recent update, the Kerala High Court has put a stay on the recent two orders issued by the Lakshadweep administration. The order included the removal of beef and chicken from the noon meal scheme. And to close all the dairy farms on the island.

This move came after the court was hearing public interest litigation filed by advocate A.Akbar from Lakshadweep. When the court asked for a reason behind such an order, the Central government replied that there were no proper facilities to store meat. So they decided to drop the option from the menu itself.

Reports suggest that the reason behind closing down the Animal Husbandry department for dairy farms was that such farms were not found financially viable for the island.

But the court did not find any of the mentioned reasons valid enough for the order to pass through. Following this, the court has put a stay on the order until further notice.

Lakshadweep Islands Protests Against Administrator

The Lakshadweep islands have been in the limelight ever since former MLA from Gujarat, Praful Patel took over as the Administrator in December 2020. Ever since his appointment, he has proposed several reforms and drafted several regulations which the islander feel is a breach towards the ecology and the culture of the local population of the island.

“Save Lakshadweep” has been going over the social media by the protestors. The Kerala Assembly had last month passed a unanimous resolution to express solidarity with the islanders. They have asked Patel to be called back.

Ajmal Ahmed, Executive Member of the Lakshadweep Bar Association filed a petition and said that the measures taken by the Patel’s administration are “mischievous” and “unscrupulous”.

He alleged that the measures are (reportedly) aimed at destroying the culture and ecology of the island.
