Let police function without political interference: Kishan Reddy to BRS govt

Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy said on Friday that the Telangana government should be vigilant about terrorism and allow police to operate freely without political interference.

When asked about the recent arrests of five people here for suspected ties to a radical outfit in Madhya Pradesh, Reddy said the government should control any terrorist activity with an iron fist.

Referring to the State government establishing a police command and control centre in Hyderabad, he asked what was centre doing. “The situation is such that police had to come from Madhya Pradesh and identify the terrorists here. Definitely, the government should give freedom to police,” Reddy told reporters here.

The Union Minister claimed that police and other government officials were unable to freely enter Hyderabad’s old city to check on non-payment of property taxes, electricity bills, and other bills, and that there were numerous attacks on government officials.

He claimed that the government had not supported the officers and that no police cases had been filed against the attackers. According to him, this has resulted in a lack of interest among government officials and police officers.

The AIMIM leaders had previously claimed that the “steering” of the BRS government was in their hands, said Reddy.

He claimed that the BRS government prioritized using police to monitor opposition party activity while failing to maintain law and order.

The Telangana police force is competent, but the state’s ruling BRS leaders are weakening it with their interference, he stated.

An MP police spokesperson said that the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested 11 people from two cities in the state on Tuesday, while five others were apprehended in Hyderabad for suspected links with the Hizb-Ut-Tahrir (HUT), a radical outfit.

Reddy also chastised the ruling BRS for allegedly facilitating the visit of Maharashtra leaders to the new Telangana Secretariat here while barring MLA Raja Singh from entering.

Journalists, leaders of people’s organizations, and other such people, he alleged, were prevented from visiting the newly-built Secretariat, despite the fact that it was named after B R Ambedkar.

When asked about the suspension of a sub-inspector of police in Jagtial district after a case was filed against him for allegedly assaulting and misbehaving with a female MBA graduate after an argument on a state-run bus, Reddy said the State government acted under pressure from AIMIM.

The Union Minister also slammed the Telangana government’s ‘Dharani’ integrated land records management system, claiming that the portal’s flaws and the involvement of middlemen were causing widespread problems.

He demanded that the State government state whether a Cabinet sub-committee appointed in response to complaints about ‘Dharani’ had submitted its report and what its recommendations were.
