Mali Warns France To “Restrain Themselves” After French President Reportedly Calls Govt “Undemocratic”

In the latest update, Mali’s Foreign Ministry has called France to “restrain itself”. This comes after French President Emmanuel Macron’s remarks were described as “unfriendly and derogatory”.

Mali Government Summons French Ambassador 

As per the latest statement released on Wednesday, the Ministry said that they have summoned the French Ambassador to Mali. The Malian Foreign Minister Abdoule This comes after Macron made comments on the “institutions” of the West African nation.

On September 30, Macron reportedly questioned the legitimacy of the current government. He reportedly said that the current democratic government is “undemocratic”. He further said that they had presided over the national tribute to Sergeant Maxime Blasco (a French soldier killed in Mali on September 24). And he was buried among his own.

Macron further (reportedly) added that the comments of the Malian Prime Minister were unacceptable. It was disgraceful and dishonors the current government.  The comments were reportedly made on the sidelines of “Africa 2020” event at the Elysee Palace.

Mali Government Calls French Government To “Restrain” Themselves

Following the statements (alleged) made by the French President Emmanuel Macron, Mali Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop expressed “indignation and disapproval” over the comments made. He further protested against the regrettable remarks that may eventually harm the friendly relations between the two nations.

The Malian government further said that French authorities should “restrain themselves” by avoiding “value judgements”. They further asked them to concentrate on the essentials and in particular to fight against terrorism in Sahel.

He further said that Mali is ready to build with partners a sincere and concerted relationship and respect the principle of non-interference in accordance with the aspirations of the Malian people.

This comes after there has been a verbal escalation between Bamako and Paris. On September 25, the Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maiga informed the UN General Assembly that Macron’s announcement of reorganising the French military  represented a “a kind of abandonment in flight”.
