Medical Association Requests Relief for Kafeel Khan

A letter has been written by the (IMA) Indian Medical Association to the Uttar Pradesh government regarding the suspension of Dr.kafeel Khan

Dr. Kafeel Khan was suspended from the BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, subsequent to being accused in the death of 60 children in August 2017, allegedly because of an oxygen shortage.

The letter written by the Uttar Pradesh division of the IMA, to the Medical Education Minister Suresh Khanna reads, “Indian Medical Association headquarters has received an application from our member, Dr. Kafeel Khan, regarding his suspension from the BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur.” The letter includes, “IMA requests you to consider his plight with compassion and merit, and also to consider the matter regarding his suspension.”

The IMA written letter is signed by the president and state secretary of the Uttar Pradesh IMA.

Letters have already been written to the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in favour of Khan by different medical bodies, including PMSF (Progressive Medico’s and Scientists Forum) and MSC (Medical Services Centre).

Dr Kafeel Khan has been suspended since the past three years even after nine different inquiries, as week as the High Court, granting him clean chit on charges of medical negligence and corruption.

All the other doctors who were suspended with him have been reinstated.

Khan said to have composed more than 25 letters to the state government requesting them to revoke his suspension however has received no response.

Khan stated that he was in limbo as the government was neither revoking his suspension nor terminating his services. This kept him from looking for employment somewhere else or beginning a private practice.

He said that the CM of Kerala had asked him to help during the outbreak of the Nipah virus (2018) but he could not, given his circumstances.

He included that the suspension had taken both a financial and emotional toll for him and his family.

Khan stated he was keen to offer his services at this critical juncture. He said that as winter approaches and children catch infections and have lowered immunity, they will become super spreaders. This is the time for him to discharge his duties.
