Mitr Clinic: An oasis for transgenders in Hyderabad

Mitr Clinic, the state’s first healthcare facility for members of the transgender community, has swiftly established itself as an oasis where the members of the community can walk in without fear of being judged while receiving outstanding health care from their peers.

Over 1000 Transgender community members from Telangana visit the ‘Safe Zindagi Mitr Clinic’ near Narayanguda on a frequent basis to get excellent medical facilities, engage with their peers, and freely discuss their mental health difficulties in a safe, empathic, and pleasant environment.

“The nicest thing about Mitr Clinic is that it is managed by transgender people for transgender people from Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana. The Mitr Clinic expands the transgender community’s possibilities significantly. Discrimination has no place here,” clinic manager Shreya Reddy said.

Mitr Clinic’s doors are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for community members to consult a doctor on a wide range of health issues, seek advice from experts on Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) or any other health issues related to gender affirmation, and even seek guidance on how to access social entitlements.

The Mitr clinic’s employees, which includes two doctors, support workers such as counsellors, mental health professionals, and nursing staff, are all transgender, making it easier for patients to open up.

“Aside from health issues, many people come to us for support and advice on how to apply for a PAN, Aadhar card, or other certificates. Despite difficulties in the last two years during the epidemic, we were able to keep Mitr Clinic partially operational, which helped the community members much,” adds Shreya Reddy.

Rachana Mudraboyina, a well-known transgender rights activist who has been active in pushing community members to attend the clinic in big numbers, stated that it was not easy in the early months.

“It took a few weeks for the community members to realise that they now have a safe healthcare centre where they may come in without inhibitions or fear of being judged or discriminated against.  Furthermore, all doctors and other healthcare personnel here are qualified, and all medical services given here are scientifically based. The Mitr Clinic has truly become an oasis for members of the community,” said Rachana.
