MP mulling to make police verification mandatory before marriage to prevent Love-Jihad

Not happy enough with the promulgation of Freedom to Religion Ordinance in the state against Love-Jihad cases, the Madhya Pradesh government has now decided to introduce a new stricter measure to deal with love-Jihad, a much talked illusionistic tendency being spread mostly in BJP ruled states in the country.

According to Home Minister Dr.Narottam Mishra, the new move will make it mandatory for all the organisations performing marriages, to go for a police verification of both the couple before solemnizing the same. All such organisations must have to apprise the police before performing such marriages as per new rules.

While talking to the media persons on Thursday at Bhopal, the minister said, the new rule of police verification will help prevent the marriages being performed using fake documents. Upon implementing the new rule, nobody can dare to plan a marriage by keeping their name and identity into concealment.

It is pertinent to mention here that a stricter ordinance was already enforced against the illusionistic love-jihad cases in Madhya Pradesh. However, he said, the new rule of disclosing the identity before the police ahead of the marriage will make the law more tangible.

“A new case of Love Jihad was reported on Wednesday itself in Bhopal and the police begin investigating the matter soon after booking the case. The culprit will not be spared,” claim the minister.

Claiming that the Madhya Pradesh government is serious about Love Jihad cases, the Home Minister Narottam Mishra said, “Such marriages can be prevented before they were performed by implementing the new pre-verification rule.” He also made it clear that introduction of a new rule does not mean that the existing Freedom to Religion Ordinance became ineffective in dealing with Love-Jihad incidents.

“Actually we want to strengthen the ordinance. So, we are seriously pondering over the recommendations so as to prevent Shraddha like incidents in the future who was brutally murdered,” he explained.

According to Mishra, the reported love-jihad cases being filed under the Freedom to Religion Ordinance speaks about its impact in volume. During the year 2021, when the Freedom to Religion Ordinance was first introduced, a total number of 65 cases have been booked under this law. However, this year the number has already reached 49 so far.
