NATO Members Meet Soon; Afghanistan, Covid, Climate Change In top Agenda

With the pandemic still holding a scary ground across the world and the rising variants, the Covid 19 pandemic and the situation in Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover are in the top agenda of the 67th annual session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the NATO alliance. The meeting is to be hosted by Portugal.

NATO To Discuss Relations With Russia, China 

As per the latest reports, the event is scheduled to happen from October 8 to 11 and will be attended by the Portuguese government officials. Along with the NATO representatives, legislators from 30 NATO member states, defense experts and representatives of the alliance’s partner countries.

The participants of the event will also assess NATO’s relations with Russia and China and the situation in the Middle East and North Africa. They will also be discussing global action on climate change and the fight against “misinformation” about the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Gerald Connolly, president of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly described Portugal as a “crucial partner” as the strategic alliance concept is revised.

Furthermore, Ruxandra Popa, Secretary General of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly said that the session’s resolutions will be sent to the Secretary General of NATO and to the governments of the member nations.

NATO Expels Eight Members Of Russia 

The above news comes after NATO has expelled eight member of Russia’s mission to the alliance. A NATO official said that the members expelled were undeclared Russian intelligence officers. This would further deteriorate the ties between the western countries and Russia reminiscent of the Cold war.

The expulsion of the Russians came in response to the Moscow’s mission to the alliance headquarters in Brussels which would have been halved if malign was suspected with the Russian activities. Furthermore, NATO clarified that they have reduced the number of Russian representatives available to 10.
