No role for religious gurus in politics: CM KCR

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has stated that religious gurus have no role in politics and that such religious leaders should confine themselves to Mutts rather than “infiltrating” politics and expressing their views on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

The Uniform Civil Code is an Indian proposal to develop and implement personal laws for citizens that apply equally to all citizens.

The BRS chief also accused the central government of politicizing religious figures. The Telangana chief minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) chief stated this on Thursday at a press conference following the inauguration of his party’s office in Nagpur. He also held a party meeting as part of his efforts to expand in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.

The remarks by Telangana Chief Minister KCR came after the Law Commission solicited views and suggestions on the Uniform Civil Code from the public and recognised religious organisations. on Wednesday.

When asked about the UCC, Telangana Chief Minister said, “Where are they (the Centre) bringing dharma gurus (religious leaders) into politics?”

“Religious leaders should run Mutts, worship, and perform yagnas; they are causing a lot of chaos in the country by infiltrating politics,” said the BRS leader.

“Seers have no business in uniform civil code, so they should worship in the Mutts. We’ll see when Modi brings the Uniform Civil Code, but there’s no need to think about it right now,” he added.

“We want to bring change in the country and there is no rush for it, whether we will win or lose elections, but our fight will continue till the change comes,” said KCR.

The Law Commission has given respondents 30 days to present their views on the UCC. According to officials, the 22nd Law Commission of India is reviewing the Uniform Civil Code, among other things, on a referral from the Ministry of Law and Justice.

Meanwhile, KCR accused the BJP-led Central government of misusing central agencies, saying, “The BJP government at the Centre is misusing central agencies, and it is not appropriate to end political parties in such a manner in a democracy. Privatization of power is unnecessary because it results in losses.”

When asked if the BRS was acting as the BJP’s “B team,” KCR replied, “It doesn’t matter to us who gains and who loses, it has become a fashion in this country these days, when a party comes forward, call it B team, call it C team, call it A team, such a spectacle is created. There is no meaning to this, those who say this will keep saying that our work will be for the public, for the benefit of the public.”

When asked if he would attend the opposition meeting in Patna on June 23, he said, “It has not been decided yet, once a decision is made, I will tell you.”
