Omicron BA.2.75 causes concern in Telangana

A new sub-lineage of coronavirus’ Omicron variant, widely known as BA.2.75, was detected on Wednesday, July 6, by the World Health Organisation (WHO). This new sub-lineage was detected in several states including Telangana.

According to Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) data, the current surge of SARS cases in Telangana and other states is largely the result of BA. 4, BA. 5, and BA. 2.38.

Between March and June 7, the number of Covid infections in Telangana hovered between 55 and 65 on a daily basis. Covid cases have steadily increased in the years since then, with an average of just over 550 infections a day reported at GHMC. There have been no fatalities, though there have been minimal hospitalizations.

As per INSACOG, 77 BA.2.75 infections have occurred in nine states – Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttar Pradesh – in the last three days.

There is a lot of attention being paid to the BA.2.75 variant due to its rapid growth in India at 16 percent per day over other variants. There is some indication here that BA.2.75 might replace BA.5 if it continues to grow at the present pace.

It was appearing that the BA.5 variant was set to become dominant and replace other BA.2 variants. It has, however, raised concerns that a fresh surge could prolong the chain of daily Covid infections for a few more months with the new Omicron BA.2.75 variant.

Despite the fact that it is still too early to predict if BA.2.75 will become dominant, Dr. Fleishon suggested that it may be alarming because it may imply that a trend is yet to come.

Since BA.2.75 has multiple mutations, it is able to escape immunity gained through vaccinations and natural infection, resulting in multiple re-infections in a short period.
