Padma Shri Honors for Five Telangana Residents in Arts and Literature

Five residents of Telangana have been bestowed with the esteemed Padma Shri awards in acknowledgement of their exceptional contributions to the domains of literature, art, and education. This is cause for celebration for the state.

Dasari Kondappa: The 63-year-old Narayanpet resident has been awarded the Padma Shri in recognition of his commitment to the traditional Burra Veena playing style. The Burra Veena is an indigenous stringed instrument composed of bamboo, gourd shell, and metal strings. He is regarded as one of the last defenders of the instrument. For more than half of his life, Dasari Kondappa has worked to preserve this ancient art form.

Gaddam Sammaiah: Gaddam Sammaiah, a 67-year-old well-known Chindu Yakshaganam theater artist from Jangaon, has been awarded the Padma Shri in the field of art (dance-Yakshagana). Over the course of his five-decade career, he has appeared in over 19,000 plays and used Yakshagana to deliver social messages on a variety of topics, including environmental protection and universal literacy. To further this traditional art form, Gaddam Sammaiah established the Gaddam Sammaiah Yuva Skethram and the Chindu Yaksha Kalakarula Sangham.

A. Velu Ananda Chari: In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the arts, A. Velu Ananda Chari has been awarded a Padma Shri. Being a skilled Stapathi sculptor, the 71-year-old has created over 1,000 temples across the globe.

Kethavath Somlal: At 64 years old, this renowned Lambadi author is well-known for having translated 701 slokas from the Bhagwad Gita into Lambadi. He is acknowledged for his noteworthy contributions to literature and education.

Kurella Vittalacharya: In recognition of her contributions to literature and education, the 85-year-old Vittalacharya was also awarded the Padma Shri. He is a well-known poet and writer in Telugu from the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district. He has written 22 books and built libraries in many villages.

The Chief Minister of Telangana, A. Revanth Reddy, and Union Minister for Arts and Culture, G. Kishan Reddy, have extended their congratulations to all the award winners.
