PM Modi To Preside Over UN Security Council On Maritime Security

Amidst the Bill amendments in the parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually chair an open debate on maritime security at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on August 9.

PM Modi To Preside Over World Body For The First Time 

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi confirmed in a Tweet that PM Narendra Modi will be the Chair for an open debate on the “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Maritime Security” in virtual mode for UNSC.

He further informed that this will be first time when an Indian Prime Minister will preside over an open debate on a world body.

India Begins Two Years Tenure For The Seventh Time 

On August 1, India took over the rotating presidency for the month at the 15-nation UNSC. And from January 1, India began its two-years tenure as a non-permanent member of the UNSC for the seventh time.

As per the latest reports, India has already planned some high-level engagements with the world community on key focus issues like maritime security, peacekeeping and counter terrorism for the month of August.

India has reportedly been in the forefront in helping the friendly nations in the pursuit of the country’s ‘Act East’ policy and to enhance the military cooperation amongst the friendly nations. Following this, the Indian Navy has undertaken regular deployments to other friendly countries as part of the PM’s initiative of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).

Such engagements are part of the build Bridges of Friendship and further strengthen international cooperation. These maritime initiatives will enhance synergy and coordination between the Indian Navy and other friendly nations. It will be based on common maritime interests and commitment towards the Freedom of Navigation at the sea.

Apart from the regular port calls, the Indian Navy will also operate in the conjunction with friendly nations and will build military relations and develop interoperability in the conduct of maritime operations.
