Prof Saibaba suffered immensely in prison for years due to UAPA: Owaisi

Asaduddin Owaisi, AIMIM chief and Hyderabad Lok Sabha MP, said on Friday that Prof GN Saibaba suffered immensely in prison for years due to UAPA, while his loved ones had to watch helplessly.

He took to Twitter and wrote: “Prof Saibaba suffered immensely in prison for years because of UAPA & his loved ones had to watch helplessly. UAPA is a monster created by the collaboration of the BJP & Congress. Its victims are mostly innocent Muslims, Dalits, Adivasis & dissenters.”

“Only 3% of accused have been convicted under UAPA, but innocent people arrested under it remain in jail for years,” he added.

After serving over five years in prison under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Bombay High Court acquitted former Delhi University (DU) professor GN Saibaba on Friday of alleged Maoist links and attempts to overthrow the government of India.

Saibaba was acquitted along with co-accused Mahesh Tikri, Hem Mishra, Prashant Rahi, and Vijay Tikri. Pandu Narote, the sixth accused in the case, died as a result of jail officials’ negligence.

As per the reports, Justices Rohit Baban Deo and AL Pansare granted the acquittal.

Dr. Gokarakonda Naga Saibaba was languishing in Nagpur’s Central Prison since 2017, despite repeated court appeals for his release.

Saibaba was imprisoned for alleged ties to banned extreme left organizations. While he was granted bail following his initial arrest in 2014, he was sentenced to life in prison in 2017 for his ties to the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and its frontal organization, the banned Revolutionary Democratic Front (RDF).

Despite his repeated denials that he had nothing to do with the banned organization, he was charged under Sections 13, 18, 20, 38, and 39 of the UAPA and Section 120 B of the Indian Penal Code.
