Prophet row: Police release all 127 youths arrested for protests

Police released all 127 youths taken from their homes late Wednesday following a massive crackdown on protestors in the old city.

After stone pelting incidents were reported in the Shahalibanda area of the old city last night, the Commissioner’s task force barged into the homes of several youths.

Police broke into the homes of protestors who were allegedly involved in violent protests and stone-pelting incidents. An immediate police response created a panic in the area, resulting in commotion. Youths, including minors, were taken to various police stations following their arrest.

All detained persons were released on personal bonds after being arrested under CrPc section 151 (Arrest to prevent the commission of cognizable offenses).

“The police in the south zone picked up several youths in the night and released them on personal sureties. No charges have been filed under IPC sections,” said a police official.

Raja Singh then posted a video on Youtube that made derogatory statements about Prophet Muhammad, which he called a “comedy”. There were protests the same day around midnight, which continued on August 23 resulting in the arrest of the BJP MLA. The situation worsened during the night when scores of protestors remained on the streets. Wednesday was also a tense day in the city.

The Hyderabad police closed all shops and establishments in the Old City before 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Owners of businesses have been told that shuttering will begin at 7 p.m. for at least the next few days.
