Public representatives are to serve, not to boss the people: RTI Experts

In order to disseminate the awareness about RTI Act and the art of scripting the Right to Information (RTI) application before seeking information from a concerned government department, a seminar has been organised on Sunday at Alwal, Secunderabad that witnessed the presence of dozens of activists working to ensure protection of rights framed under the constitutions for its citizens.

While speaking on the occasion, the renowned RTI Activist B.V.Seshagiri said, “Citizens are supreme in a democracy. It propagates the eternal slogan like democracy for the people, of the people and by the people. Public representatives and officials actually are the public servants and there to serve the people. The powers conferred on them are to discharge their duties properly but not to boss over the people.”

Emphasizing the importance of the Act, he said, under the RTI Act the information – what the Parliament and the Assembly can access, a citizen can enjoy the same right to access the information. “As per the RTI Act Section 4 (i) (d), the officials are supposed to disseminate the information Suo Motu on their official websites to enable the citizens freely and conveniently get an access to the information,” asserted Advocate B.V.Seshagiri, who is also a Socio-Political Activist.

During the seminar, the RTI Act was presented in the letter and spirit of the Legislation by B.V.Seshagiri followed by a Question and Answer session that went on for an hour. Besides, Free Books on RTI Act three each were distributed to all the participants, law students, activists and other professionals.
