Rapid Progress in Construction of Gachibowli-Kondapur Flyover to Alleviate Traffic Congestion in Hyderabad

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is building a six-lane bidirectional flyover between Gachibowli and Kondapur in Hyderabad as part of the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP). The flyover, which is expected to cost Rs 178 crore, will connect to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) at the Gachibowli junction’s second level crossing. It is 1.2 kilometres long and 24 metres wide. The project’s goal is to reduce traffic congestion at Gachibowli Junction while also improving connection between Hitec City and the Financial District.

According to GHMC data, peak hour traffic at Gachibowli Junction in 2019 was 9,806 passenger car units (PCU) per hour, with that figure expected to rise to 17,711 PCU per hour by 2036. The flyover’s construction, which began on March 1, is expected to be completed by February 28, 2024, with a minor delay owing to land acquisition problems, according to GHMC authorities.

Recent infrastructure works to address current traffic issues and future needs include the four-lane bidirectional Shilpa Layout flyover and the Kothaguda flyover. The Shilpa Layout flyover has eased traffic flow at Gachibowli Junction, making it easier for motorists arriving from the Outer Ring Road (ORR) to enter the city’s western outskirts. Furthermore, the multi-level flyover at Botanical Garden Junction, which connects to Kothaguda and Kondapur junctions, has reduced traffic congestion at Botanical Garden Junction and addressed traffic difficulties at Kondapur Junction.
