Re-Investigation into Anti-CAA Protests: AMU Students

The students of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have asked the state police to look into the December 15th anti-CAA rally violence again and drop charges against the individuals who are innocent.

A gathering of students, driven by Abdul Hamid, the varsity’s registrar, met Additional Director General (ADG), Agra zone, Ajay Anand and gave him a memorandum in this regard on Wednesday.

ADG Anand has guaranteed them that their requests will be looked into.

The memorandum stated: Not all students should be named on the basis of recovery of motorcycles by the police from the spot after the incident as many of them are innocent. Only after the re-investigation, the charges should be framed.

It moreover stated that the students, who don’t have a criminal record, should not be punished for the “politically-motivated” episode.

It also stated in the memorandum that no move has been made against the police department for utilizing disproportionate power against students.

A year ago, on December 15, more than 70 individuals including AMU students, security officers and twelve cops including the then DIG Aligarh range, Preetinder Singh, were harmed due to the violence following the students’ protests over the CAA in the campus.

The locale police had filed two FIRs into the issue and took 26 individuals into custody, including seven AMU students.

Afterward, they were freed on conditional bail. The Rapid Action Force (RAF) had likewise filed an FIR against 1,000 unidentified protesters under different sections of IPC into the issue.
