Restoration Plans for Sher-e-Baatil Kamaan in Hyderabad

The Principal Secretary of Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD), Arvind Kumar, announced on Thursday that efforts are underway to restore the historic Daulat Khana-e-Ali Kaman, commonly known as Sher-e-Baatil Kamaan, situated within the Chaar Kamaan in the Old City.

Responding to a concerned citizen’s observation about the deteriorating condition of the kaman’s plaster, Kumar acknowledged the issue. The Chaar Kamaan, a creation from the Qutb Shahi period, holds architectural significance within Charminar. The Daulat Khana-e-Ali Kaman, situated to the West of Gulzar Houz, has experienced partial collapse, overgrowth on its walls, and a lack of lime plaster on its surface.

A tweet highlighted the structural concerns: “The arch has lost its depth and roof due to the collapse, and it is not clear since when the structure has come to such a pass.” Addressing the matter, Mohammed Sibghatulla Khan, the founder of Deccan Archives, explained, “The Sher-e-Baatil Kamaan served as an entrance to Dault Khana-e-Ali (the King’s residence) and suffered damage during Mughal emperor Aurangazeb’s invasion of Hyderabad.

Despite the attack, the kamaan has endured in the same condition for centuries. However, the restoration of the kamaan presents challenges as a part of it is located within a house situated inside the structure, making it a complex task.”

Efforts are now focused on addressing the structural issues and restoring the historical significance of the Sher-e-Baatil Kamaan, preserving a valuable piece of Hyderabad’s architectural heritage.
