Restoring the Splendor of Khursheed Jah’s Devdi: A Cultural Landmark in Hyderabad

The Khursheed Jah’s Devdi, a European-style palace near the historic Charminar in Hussaini Alam, Hyderabad, has now gotten official attention. The Quli Qutb Shah Urban Development Authority has taken serious steps to repair, remodel, and preserve this landmark edifice in order to return it to its former glory.

The Quli Qutb Shah Urban Development Authority has invited private agencies to bid on the rehabilitation project. The repair work is likely to cost Rs 12 crore and is expected to take 18 months to complete. The late-nineteenth-century structure has experienced substantial damage and degradation over the years due to negligence and lack of upkeep.

Local neighbors have expressed dissatisfaction with the government’ apparent indifference for the building, which has deteriorated to the point of collapse. The restoration initiatives aim to revitalize cultural activities and regain Khursheed Jah’s Devdi’s historical relevance. The palace’s doors and windows are currently broken, the flooring is ruined, and portions of the walls are falling. Furthermore, extensive filming in the palace has contributed to its deterioration.

During a visit to Khurshid Jah’s Devdi in December 2022, the Chief Secretary of the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department, Arvind Kumar, stated the government’s determination to restore the structure to its previous splendor. In addition, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority intends to build a garden with fountains in front of the palace to improve its overall appearance.

Khursheed Jah’s Devdi, a two-story platform mansion, originally offered brilliant chandeliers, luxurious carpets, and magnificent woodwork. It is a European-style architectural masterpiece. It once hosted a women’s college until 2008, when concerns about the building’s structural condition forced its removal.

The restoration effort promises to restore Khursheed Jah’s Devdi to its former glory, ensuring its status as a treasured monument in Hyderabad’s cultural environment. The preservation of this historic palace will not only restore its architectural splendor but will also honor its cultural heritage for future generations.
