Rs.54 crore worth of heroin seized from South African woman at Hyderabad airport

One of the biggest drug seizures in recent times occurred on Friday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad, when customs officials seized 6.75 kg of heroin from a 26-year-old South African.

 It is believed that officers of Hyderabad Customs, Hyderabad Air Intelligence Unit at RGIA identified and intercepted the 26-year-old South African national, who arrived from Johannesburg via Doha on Friday on Qatar Airways flight (No. QR-500).

In her checked baggage, officials discovered five women’s handbags and two file folders. When the handbags and file folders were cut open, 14 black plastic packets were found concealed within the sidewalls and layers. On testing with the Narcotic Drug Detection Kit, it was found that the plastic packets contained brownish-white powder which turned out to be heroin.

Officials say the passenger was arrested under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS). Further investigation is underway.

This is the second such heroin bust by customs officials at the Hyderabad airport in less than two weeks. On April 26, a Tanzanian national was caught and 108 capsules of heroin were found in his possession.

The passenger was caught on April 26, but he was admitted to the hospital for six days and had 108 heroin capsules wrapped in transparent adhesive tape purged from his body after being caught. The passenger was arrested under relevant sections of the NDPS Act and was later placed in judicial custody.

The passenger admitted to ingesting Heroin capsules while being questioned.

The passenger was immediately brought before the Magistrate, and after obtaining permission, he was admitted to a hospital where the capsules were purged.

Officers of Customs nabbed the passenger immediately on his arrival at Hyderabad due to their alertness and prompt action. An investigation is currently underway.
