SEC Reveals 3.19 Lakh Unoppposed Candidates From UP Panchayat Elections; Ballot Counting In Process

In the recent update of the Uttar Pradesh Panchayat Election, the State Election Commission said that a total of 3.19 lakh candidates have been declared election unopposed.

SEC Takes Preventative Measures To Contain The Spread of Covid 19

As per the latest reports, the SEC said that as many as 3,19,317 candidates have been election unopposed in the panchayat elections. It includes seven members from the Zila Panchayat, 2005 members of the Kshetra Panchayat and over 3.17 lakh members on the panchayat election. The SEC said that over 178 candidates have been elected for the post of pradhan of gram panchayats, unopposed.

The counting of votes for the panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh began on Sunday morning and will go on for two days, a senior SEC Official said.

The official said that usually counting of the ballots is an eight hour shift. At the same time, every counting centre also has a health desk where a doctor is available with medicines.

The SEC said that anyone who is showing any of the Covid 19 symptoms like fever, cold and  cough are not allowed at the counting centres. Every person who enters the centre has to undergo thermal scanning.

The voting for the panchayat polls in Uttar Pradesh ended on April 29 with a 75 percent voter turnout in the fourth and the final phase.

Allahabad Court Slams UPSEC Over 135 Deaths At Poll Duty

Last month, Allahabad Court slammed the Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission (UPSEC) to seek an explanation regarding the failure of following the Covid 19 safety guidelines during the election process. The court referred to the deaths of 135 people who were deployed during the election.

Following this, they high court has directed the SEC to immediately take actions on the same and strictly follow Covid 19 guidelines for the rest of the phases. However, if they fail to do so, the officials who are involved in the matter will face legal actions. During the hearing of the case, the court noted that the police and the State Election Commission did nothing to save the people who were on election duty.
