Significant increase noticed in fire incidents in Telangana

The number of fire-related incidents in the State increased significantly from 6,675 in 2021 to 7,368 in 2022.

Last year, 45 people died in fire-related incidents as opposed to 25 in 2021, while 213 lives were saved by fire fighters as opposed to 19 in 2021.

The most common cause of fire incidents is careless disposal of cigarettes, followed by short circuits, faulty electrical cables, gas coal furnaces, and chimney fires.

Several awareness campaigns are being conducted by the Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department to promote fire safety. Around 40,000 awareness programs were conducted across the state in 2022, compared with just 10,000 the previous year, and 432 inspections were conducted in 2022, compared with just 303 in 2021.

“Following recent fire incidents at Deccan Mall Complex and Swapnalok Complex in Secunderabad, joint inspections are being carried out and notices issued to the building owners to rectify the violations,” said the official.

From Friday to April 20 in the State, the fire department is holding a series of awareness-raising programs as part of Fire Safety Week. A number of activities are planned, such as poster releases, blood donation camps, commemoration day parades, fire drills and first aid, and seminars.

During the summer months, the focus of fire personnel will be on operations rather than enforcement. “Leaves of the fire personnel have been cancelled. Firefighting equipment has been thoroughly checked so that it does not breakdown during exigencies,” an official said.

Telangana State has 134 fire stations and 260 fire tenders with the department. The Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services department added bullet motorcycles equipped with water mist cylinders a few years ago to rush to fire mishap locations before the large fire tenders arrive.
