Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal charged with ball tampering

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal was charged by the ICC on Sunday over ball-tampering in the second Test against the West Indies in St Lucia.

The incident sparked ugly scenes on the third morning after the visitors were informed the ball had been changed and they would be docked five runs.

The Sri Lankans refused to take the field in protest at the decision and its board says it will fight any charges.

The International Cricket Council announced on Twitter that Chandimal had been charged for “breaching Level 2.2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct”.

Chandimal is the third international captain to be charged with ball tampering in recent years. Faf du Plessis, was fined his match fee in 2016-17 after being caught applying a sweet to the ball in Hobart. It was his second offence. Steve Smith was fined his match fee and received a one match ban for his role in the sandpaper scandal in South Africa.
