Students from rural areas are now studying at top colleges in Telangana

Students from remote areas of the state are given equal opportunities as their urban counterparts to gain admission to top and reputable degree colleges in Hyderabad. Courtesy the Degree Online Services Telangana (DOST), the online and app-based platform.

During the academic year 2022-23, the DOST assisted over 5,100 students, mostly from rural areas, in gaining admission to top colleges such as Nizam College, Government Degree College for Women, Begumpet, Government City College, Hyderabad, and Telangana Mahila Viswavidyalayam, formerly known as Osmania University College for Women, Koti.

The Telangana State Council of Higher Education data show that 1,520 students, mostly from rural backgrounds, enrolled in Telangana Mahila Viswavidyalayam colleges, with 1,415 enrolling in the Government City College, 1,294 in Government Degree College for Women, Begumpet and 915 in Nizam College.

Since the DOST platform offers a diverse range of course combinations and colleges, rural students are no longer limited to the institutions available in their respective home towns, but are instead exploring various options and securing admissions in preferred courses in Hyderabad.

Last year, the DOST assisted 114 and 147 students from the Nalgonda district in enrolling in Telangana Mahila Viswavidyalayam and Government City College, respectively. Similarly, students from Adilabad, Nirmal, Mulugu, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, and Mancherial districts received admission to the aforementioned institutions in Hyderabad for the academic year 2022-23.

The majority of students who were admitted were intermediate toppers. Degree admissions through DOST are granted based on intermediate and reservation rule merit.

One of the most important aspects of the DOST is the removal of geographical barriers, which allows students from remote villages to apply for degree admissions with the click of a button. The DOST enabled students to apply for all participating degree colleges with an application form, eliminating the need for students to travel long distances to obtain application forms from various colleges and submit them for admissions.
