Tamil Nadu Raises Vaccine Shortage Alarms; Priority For Second Dose

Amidst the rising daily demands of the Covid 19 vaccine, the Tamil Nadu Health Department officials recently informed that only 50,000 doses were left in the central pool.

Tamil Nadu Health Department Informs Vaccine Shortage To The Union Ministry 

As per the latest reports, the public health department in Tamil Nadu informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare that there’s a shortage in the state of vaccine doses. However, the next quota of vaccines will be available only by July 11.

Following this, the officials have decided to prioritise the people who are to receive their second dose of Covid 19 vaccines. A senior official from the state pubic health department spoke to the media. They said that the Greater Chennai Corporation is facing a shortage of vaccines.

Recently, the department has been conducting massive awareness campaigns. Many celebrities including movie stars, sportspersons, and TV stars have been urging people to take the Covid 19 vaccines to curb the spread. Following this, there has been an increase in demand for the supply of the vaccine and the state has also seen long queues at the vaccination centers.

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Claims State Vaccination Capacity to be 8 Lakh Per Day 

According to the health officials, Tamil Nadu has vaccinated 1,37,482 on Monday alone. So far 1.58 crore people have been vaccinated in the state. Health minister Ma Subramanian claimed that the state has the capacity to vaccinate 8 lakh people in a day. But because of the shortage of Covid 19 vaccination supply, the state has not been able to meet the target.

Reports suggest that in the July allocation, the state was allocated 71 lakh Covid 19 vaccines, but they had received only 10 lakh.
It is to be noted that Tamil Nadu has started vaccinating pregnant women as well as lactating mothers recently and in districts like Nilgiris, it has achieved 100 percent vaccination for all the eligible population including the tribals.
