Telagana least among UTs & States in provision of beds in hospitals

Though the Telangana Government claimed that it has put in place much required facilities especially the required number of beds in district hospitals, the state stood third from the last in the list of 38 States and Union Territories with sufficient number of beds in district hospitals.

According to NITI Aayog report “Best Practices in the Performance of District Hospitals” the Telangana State has a mere 10 beds per 1 lakh population as against the national average of 24 beds per 1 lakh population. While the Puducherry state tops the list with 222 beds per 1 lakh population, Bihar has a lowest average of 6 beds per 1 lakh population just two steps down the Telangana.

In addition to Puducherry, three more Union Territories such as Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Ladakh, Daman and Diu besides a Northeastern state Arunachal Pradesh carries over 100 beds per 1 Lakh population. The rest of the UTs and States like Dadra and Nagar Naveli, Lakshadweep, Sikkim, Mizoram, Delhi, Chandigarh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Goa, Tripura and Manipur have more number of beds than the national average of 24 for per one lakh population.

Only States like Uttarakhand, Kerala, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand and Bihar have least number of beds than the national average. Interestingly the neighboring Andhra Pradesh comparatively fares well against Telangana with 18 beds for per one Lakh population.
