Telangana: Calls for a halt on fitness certificate penalties get louder

After protests by drivers and unions against the daily fine of Rs 50 for not renewing fitness certificates last month, the state transport department reached out to the government requesting to put a halt on the Central Motor Vehicle Act for collecting the penalty.

Telangana taxi drivers JAC, Telangana gig and platform workers union, Telangana auto JAC, Telangana lorry drivers JAC, tours and travels and other associations have all been against the policy of collecting arbitrary penalties of Rs 50 per day.

They requested that the state government immediately remove the daily fine of Rs 50 for failure to renew fitness certificates. After various union protests and representations to the State government, the Transport department sent a proposal to the State government to put a hold on the central law of daily penalties.

M Dayanand, general secretary of Telangana Auto and Motor Vehicle Welfare Union, said the enhanced fee came into effect on April 1, 2022, whereas the notification was issued by the ministry on October 4, 2021.

“The High Court of Karnataka also stayed the Central Motor Vehicle Act issued by the Ministry of Road Transportation and Highways that increased fees on vehicle certifications. Other states, like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi, collect Rs. 10 per day, but Telangana is taking Rs. 50 as fine. The unions want the Telangana government to put a stay on the CMV law,” he said.

As a result of the new Central Motor Vehicle Act, owners of various transport vehicles must pay hefty fines. The majority of auto-rickshaw and cab drivers are struggling to pay thousands of rupees in penalties.

Motorists are fuming as the implementation of new rates on April 1 means they have to make hefty additional payments to get their work done. Telangana Auto Drivers JAC member A Sathi Reddy said, there are thousands of auto-rickshaw drivers and cabbies who face difficulties.
