Telangana: Congress demands to waive off pending challans

In a statement on Monday, Senior Congress leader Sameer Waliullah called on the state government to waive off all pending traffic challans or at least extend the one-time discount offer by another three months.

Although the police made a one-time concession to traffic rule violators, the Congress leader said around 35 per cent of them were unable to clear their pending challans due to several factors, including financial inability. He made it clear that Congress does not support motorists who violate traffic norms nor consider them to be serious offenders.

“All of them were in violation of the traffic laws, but they can be forgiven for their mistakes.” The motorists who did not take advantage of the one-time discount offer were not stubborn but financially troubled due to rising inflation. As a one-time relief, the State Government should waive off all pending challans,” reads the Congress leader’s media release.

As Sameer Waliullah pointed out, rising petrol, diesel and other essential product prices contributed to the people’s inability to avail of the one-time challan discount offer. It is hard for the average person to make ends meet since his income has been the same for the past few years, but their expenditures have grown significantly.

In response to news that Hyderabad Traffic Police plans to collect pending challans from violators’ doors or seize their vehicles, the Congress leader said, “People who are unable to clear their pending challans despite receiving a huge discount will never be able to pay 100 per cent of the amount, and that the seizure of vehicles from their doorstep will only cause public humiliation to lakhs of motorists.” The proposal should be dropped.”

Sameer Waliullah added that the State Government collected nearly Rs. 303 Crore through the discount offer. According to him, the entire amount should go toward road safety measures.
