Telangana: Cook, hostel official at ST girls hostel suspended after 34 students fall ill

Two days after 34 ST Girls Hostel students fell ill after dinner in Wardhannapet, the welfare officer O Jyothi and cook V Venkatram were suspended, and Ilaiah, the contractor, was removed from his duties. Satyavathi Rathod, the tribal welfare minister, also ordered immediate action against all the officials involved in the incident.

As a result of the negligence of duty, not ensuring the students received hygienic food, providing contaminated food, and ignoring a complaint from the students that a lizard was found in the rice, the Warangal district collector, Dr. B Gopi, suspended the hostel welfare officer on Tuesday.

J Upender Rao, the senior civil judge in Warangal district and secretary of the district legal service authority, also rushed to MGM Hospital, where 13 of the 35 students were treated. To the judge, the students described their ordeal.

According to MGM Hospital superintendent Dr. V Chandrashekar, the 13 students were discharged later that evening as their conditions improved.

Afterward, Upender Rao inspected the hostel and inquired about the lizard in the rice and the food.

Initially, students who complained of nausea and stomachache were rushed to the nearby primary health center (PHC), and 13 of the most seriously ill were transferred to the MGM Hospital in Warangal. After treatment, those admitted to the PHC were discharged.

B Hari Singh, Additional Collector of Warangal district, and DTDO Shaik Zaheeruddin visited the hostel to investigate the food poisoning incident. In a meeting with officials, students and their parents demanded strict action against those responsible for the incident. Parents continue to remove their children from the hostel, saying they do not want to risk their health.

In protest against food poisoning at the ST Girls Hostel in Wardhannapet, BJYM activists staged a protest outside the BC Welfare Office at Masab Tank on Tuesday. Such repeated incidents in government-run hostels for students of social welfare residential schools led them to call for the resignation of Education Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy.
