Telangana gets no funds for smart cities in three years from Centre

With the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said on Monday that no help has been extended to Telangana in the last three years for the development of Karimnagar and Warangal under Smart Cities Mission (SCM), the union government’s false claims about Telangana receiving funding for Karimnagar and Warangal were uncovered.

TRS leaders also questioned the non-issuance of funds for Warangal and Karimnagar under SCM for three consecutive years.

Since Gujarat, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh benefited from SCM assistance in the past three years while Telangana was denied the same,

A whopping Rs.1,722 crores were received by Uttar Pradesh in the last three years, followed by Karnataka with Rs.1,240.16 crores and Gujarat with Rs.563.50 crores while not even a single rupee went to Telangana.

SCM was introduced on June 25, 2015, and 100 Smart Cities were chosen through four rounds of competition between January 2016 and June 2018. In accordance with SCM guidelines, the Central Government provides financial assistance to each city annually of Rs.100 crore. State governments must contribute an equal amount on a matching basis.

As of July 8, 2022, the Central Government had released Rs.30,751.41 crore for smart cities, according to an official note from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MOHUA). Approximately 90 percent of these funds were utilized.

The cumulative amount released to Gujarat by the Central Government from 2015-16 is Rs.2,139.50 crore, of which Rs.2024.74 crore had been utilized. Uttar Pradesh received Rs.3142 crore and utilized Rs.2699.34 crore, while Karnataka received Rs.2618.16 crore and utilized Rs.2419.95 crore. The state of Telangana received only Rs.392 crore and used the funds.

As a result of these revelations, TSMDC Chairman M Krishank tweeted: “Government of India claims that it has provided States with Rs.48,000 crore for Smart Cities Mission has not released a single rupee to Telangana since last 3 years. BJP MP’s care to speak about it in Parliament?”

A number of Twitter users expressed outrage at the Central government’s stepmotherly treatment of Telangana. Ram Sim tweeted, “They have not given funding for Telangana floods and now it is clear BJP is ignoring the State.”

According to Hyderabad Press Information Bureau officials, MOHUA withdrew the official note for reasons better known to the authorities.
