Telangana govt procured 6.06 crore tonnes of paddy in last eight years

The Telangana government spent a whopping Rs 1.07 lakh crore and procured 6.06 crore tonnes of paddy in the last eight years to provide much-needed assistance to farmers in the state. The State government set a new record in 2020-21 by procuring a total of 1.41 crore tonnes of paddy cultivated during both the Vaanakalam (Kharif) and Yasangi (Rabi) seasons.

Soon after the formation of the state, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao initiated a number of initiatives, including the construction of irrigation projects, financial assistance to Rythu Bandhu, Rythu Bima, uninterrupted free power supply, and other schemes to support the agricultural sector. As a result, the gross cultivation area has increased from 1.34 crore acres in 2014 to 2.3 crore acres in 2021-22.

Likewise, gross paddy production rose from 68 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 to 2.49 crore tonnes in 2021-22.

As a result, the State government provided full support to farmers by procuring the maximum amount of paddy possible by opening over 6,000 paddy procurement centers across the state. Following the purchase of paddy at the Minimum Support Price, arrangements have been made to deposit the amount directly into farmers’ bank accounts within a week.

Telangana became the only state to purchase all paddy produced by farmers following the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown in 2020-21. The state government made certain that farmers did not suffer as a result of a lack of remunerative prices for their paddy.

As a result, paddy procurement has increased from 24.3 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 to 1.2 crore tonnes in 2021-22.

District collectors told to purchase drenched paddy after drying up

This year, during the Vaanakalam (Kharif) marketing season, the State government began efforts to purchase nearly one crore tonnes of paddy from farmers. As of Wednesday, nearly 33.5 lakh tonnes of paddy valued at Rs 6,892 crore had been purchased through 6,787 centers.

Meanwhile, the Telangana government is milling the paddy and distributing six kilograms of rice to each member of a family with a ration card, with no limit on the number of people in a family. Around 2.83 crore people in the state benefit from 90.01 lakh ration cards.

The Centre issues approximately 54.37 lakh ration cards under the Anthyodaya Anna Yojana, while the State government issues another 35.64 lakh ration cards. The central government only provides 5 kg of rice per person up to four members in a family. The State government compensates for the remaining quantity of rice in order to ensure that all ration card holders receive an equal amount of rice.
