Telangana govt will consider providing fresh ration cards to poor soon: Gangula Kamalakar

BC Welfare and Civil Supplies Minister Gangula Kamalakar said that the State government will consider providing fresh ration cards to the poor soon.

He mentioned that the Telangana government issued 35 lakh ration cards in addition to 53 lakh ration cards provided by the union government under the National Food Security Act (NFSA)

In response to the discussion in the Assembly on Civil Supplies and Backward Classes Welfare, the Minister stated that while the Central government has identified approximately 1.9 crore people as poor and is providing rations, the State government’s ration cards cover approximately 95 lakh people.

Furthermore, the Centre provides 5 kg of rice per person at Rs 3 per kg. However, the State government has subsidised it further and supplies 6 kg of rice per person at just Rs 1 per kg for all the 88 lakh ration card holders.

Kamalakar announced that digital classrooms have been launched in all the 281 BC Welfare Residential Educational Institutions where about 108 meritorious students were being trained specially by a faculty team from Harvard University through e-learning.

He stated that 16 new degree colleges will be established under the BC Welfare Department in addition to the existing three degree colleges in the State.

Telangana prioritizes welfare

Only a few states can compete with the country’s youngest state in terms of implementing welfare programs or making budgetary allocations for the effective implementation of such programs.

During his interaction with the Finance Commission in 2019, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao categorically stated, “Hum sarkar chala rahe hai.. vyapaar nahi” (We are running a government, not a business entity),’ recalled Finance Minister T Harish Rao during his Budget presentation in the Assembly here on Monday.

Previously, successive governments extended Rs 200 monthly pension. The Telangana government increased Aasara pensions from Rs 200 to Rs 2016 after the state was formed. This Budget, Rs 12,000 crore was proposed towards Aasara pensions.

A brainchild of the Chief Minister, Dalit Bandhu is a revolutionary welfare scheme for the socioeconomic uplift of Dalits. Under the scheme, the state government will provide a financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to each Dalit family.

The Telangana government is implementing a one-of-a-kind welfare scheme called Kalyana Lakshmi to assist the poor in performing the marriages of their daughters.

The State government has provided Rs 10,416 crore in assistance to the 12.46 lakh beneficiaries since its inception. The Telangana government is dedicated to the welfare of women and children.

As a result, many schemes were being implemented on a large scale for the welfare of women and children in the State.
