Telangana High Court halts the destruction of the Gaddiannaram market

The Telangana High Court temporarily halted the destruction of the city’s Gaddiannaram fruit market. The Chief Justice of the High Court, Justice Satish Chandra, has expressed his displeasure with the manner in which the demolition is being carried out by the state government’s authority, calling it “unfortunate.”

The HC issued these instructions in response to a petition filed by market dealers. On February 8th of this month, the HC issued directives to the state government, requesting that the traders be allowed to relocate their items to the newly erected Bata Singaram market yard for a duration of one month. However, the authorities did not reply to the HC’s directives encouraging harsh remarks against the state administration on the 4th of this month.

Gangaiah Naidu, counsel for the petitioners, said the HC that the authorities had not only violated the HC’s directives, but had also demolished the existing buildings on the market grounds.

According to the government’s pleader, 76 of the 106 commission agents have already left their offices. The HC, on the other hand, had adjourned contempt proceedings against the state government to the 14th of this month and issued letters to the marketing department’s senior secretary, M. Raghunandan Rao and its director, Laxmi bai, would appear before the court on the date of adjournment.

The Telangana High Court directed the State government to reopen the fruit market and allow traders to continue operations until alternate arrangements could be arranged at the temporary market in Batasingaram logistics park.

Though market officials promptly reopened the market, on Monday night, police personnel deployed in huge numbers forcibly evicted traders by resorting to lathicharge, and police themselves moved over 300 trucks to Batasingaram market during the night.

We all dispersed as soon as they started lathi-charging. They completely destroyed the market. There are a few of contempt orders against the government in court, but they are not even obeying the court’s instructions. The goondaraj of the government is in effect. What business do the cops have moving the cars and supervising the demolition?  Md Tajuddin, head of the Fruit Market Association, asked.
