“Telangana Ku Haritha Haram: Transforming Hyderabad’s Green Cover and Aesthetics”

Since 2015, the Telangana Ku Haritha Haram (TKHH) initiative’s tree planting programme has resulted in a major increase in Hyderabad’s green cover. The initiatives of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) Urban Biodiversity division have not only improved the city’s greenery but also made it a more appealing destination.

Several regions in Hyderabad, including Gachibowli Stadium Road, HITEC City to Moosapet Road, and University of Hyderabad (UoH) Road, have seen significant improvements in greenery over the years, making them popular destinations for leisurely drives. The GHMC has also prioritised greenery in public spaces like as parks, creating perfect settings for families to spend quality time together on weekends.

Residents and members of residential welfare associations have expressed gratitude for the development of saplings planted during the 2019 Haritha Haram edition, which have already grown into large trees. These trees contribute to the city’s total green cover and provide much-needed shade during the scorching summer months.

Hyderabad’s green initiatives have delivered favourable results, with a 7.7% rise in the state’s green cover. The city has also gained worldwide acclaim, including the AIPH World Green City Awards and being named twice as one of the “Tree Cities of the World” by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and Arbour Day Foundation.

V Krishna, GHMC’s Additional Commissioner for Urban Bio-Diversity, emphasised the accomplishments and the favourable influence of greenery on Hyderabad’s ecology and aesthetics.
