Telangana Minister KT Rama Rao Reviews Hyderabad’s Preparedness for Monsoon Season

On Tuesday, Telangana municipal administration and urban development minister KT Rama Rao convened a review meeting to examine Hyderabad’s readiness for the forthcoming monsoon season. He urged municipal officials to step up their efforts to deal with potential crisis circumstances caused by excessive rain.

KTR emphasised the need of prioritising people’s safety and well-being amid emergency situations induced by heavy rain and probable flash floods. Senior officials informed him that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and other urban local bodies (ULBs) in the state have completed safety audits for nalas (drainage channels).

The Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP), which aims to reduce urban floods in GHMC areas, was also discussed. According to an SNDP official, the majority of the associated improvements have been done, and some inundated colonies from last year are now better prepared to deal with similar conditions this year.

KTR directed officials to locate low-lying regions and deploy dewatering pumps and other equipment to alleviate waterlogging. The importance of continuous monitoring of water storage levels in ponds and lakes was emphasised in order to prevent overflow.

During the discussion, KTR also discussed the recently implemented Ward Office System and admitted that there may be some initial issues that must be resolved. He asked GHMC zonal commissioners and deputy commissioners to deal with issues as they emerge. He also directed the formation of a specialised IT team to use technology and improve the efficiency of the Ward Office operation.

The purpose of the review meeting was to ensure that all required preparations are in place to properly manage the monsoon season and protect the lives and property of citizens in Hyderabad and other parts of the state.
