Telangana: Panchayat Raj department carrying out works worth Rs 2,669 crore

Panchayat Raj Minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao has directed that the tender process for 900 pending works be completed within the next week. He also asked them to expedite ongoing projects and ensure timely completion without sacrificing quality.

The Panchayat Raj department has approved 3,009 engineering projects with an outlay of Rs 2,669.74 crore to be carried out across the state. The tender process for 2,109 works that are in various stages of completion has been completed.

On Friday, while reviewing the progress of various works with engineering officials from the Panchayat Raj department here, the Minister instructed the authorities concerned to constantly review the progress of ongoing works and complete them on time.

He warned that sluggishness and callousness in finishing the works would not be tolerated. The officials were instructed to resolve any issues with the contractors in an amicable manner.

“The officials should coordinate with the local elected representatives, contractors and people to ensure speedy execution of the works. All the pending works should be completed within next six months,” he added.

Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Secretary Sandeep Kumar Sultania, Engineer-in-Chief Sanjeeva Rao and other officials participated in the meeting.

The Panchayat Raj department received the highest allocation of Rs 31,426 crore in this year’s budget. This is possibly the first time the department has received such a large budgetary allocation, reflecting the State government’s commitment to rural development.

To begin, with the State government’s allocation of Rs 2,587 crore for laying new roads and maintaining existing roads, rural roads in the State are set to get a black topping.

Previously, the money was credited in the District Treasury, and Gram Panchayats had to encash the cheques issued by the district administration. With direct transfer, local bodies representatives can utilize the funds in an independent manner without waiting for Finance department approval.
