Telangana Police raises awareness against 5G SIM scams

With Airtel and Jio launching 5G services, scammers are capitalizing on the opportunity. Telangana State Police has shared an awareness video on social media platforms in an attempt to raise public awareness of the scams.

The video demonstrates how one can be duped into sharing OTPs with cybercriminals under the guise of activating 5G services on one’s SIM card.

Telangana State Police’s Twitter account shared the video, writing, “Beware of 5G Upgradation sim scam. Don’t fall prey to cyber fraudsters who can dupe you on the pretext of upgrading your sims.”

According to Money Purse’s video, cyber criminals will contact you via phone call or text message to inform you that you are eligible for shifting to a free 5G service. They will then request an OTP from you in order to activate the services.

When a person gives their OTP, the scammers hack their phones and steal all of their personal information. Furthermore, they can also gain access to banking apps and steal all of the money from their accounts.

It should be noted that 5G services are only available in a few cities, and the majority of existing SIM cards are already compatible with the service.

Furthermore, activation can be completed by following simple steps on your phone, and remote activation is not usually required.

Any calls or texts from unknown sources claiming to assist you in activating 5G services should be treated with caution. It is not recommended to share OTPs unless there is a legitimate reason.

The Gurugram police department has also issued a warning about 5G scams. As per the reports, the department advised residents not to share their one-time passwords (OTPs) with any tele caller because doing so could result in a wipe out of their bank accounts.
