Telangana: Power tariff nominal compared to other States

While the revised charges took effect, the power tariff in Telangana is still nominal when compared with half a dozen States including Andhra Pradesh at Rs.2.71 per unit.

After its formation in 2014, Telangana has been ensuring uninterrupted power supplies for all sectors with nominal power charges, despite the fact that it faced power holidays for industries and power cuts for the domestic and agricultural sectors during undivided Andhra Pradesh.

Telangana is the only state that supplies quality power 24 hours a day to the agriculture sector, helping farmers on all fronts, including providing water to meet irrigation needs.

Data collected by the Energy Department in 2021 shows Kerala collecting nominal charges of 1.60 rupees per unit, Maharashtra 1.94 rupees and Madhya Pradesh 2.26 rupees per unit. Rajasthan collects Rs.5.24 per unit, Punjab Rs.4.74 per unit, and West Bengal Rs.4.54. Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh collect Rs.3.92 per unit and Rs.4.2 per unit, respectively.

In line with the revised tariff including all charges, Telangana is collecting Rs.2.71 per unit and AP is collecting Rs.2.95 per unit.

MA Vazeer, president of the Telangana State Power Employees union, welcomed the decision to increase charges, saying the move would relieve some of the financial burdens on power utilities.

“Since it’s a nominal increase, we should all accept it,” he insisted, noting that the rates had been raised after five years.

“We are confident that the people will understand the situation since the State government is supplying quality power without interruptions in the domestic, industrial, and agricultural sectors,” he said.

A delegation of Congress leaders recently submitted a representation to the Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission chairman requesting a complete reversal of the enhanced electricity tariff, stating that the people of Telangana are extremely disappointed and frustrated with the unprecedented enhancement of electricity tariff.

They added that this kind of exorbitant increase in tariffs was not seen even during the time of united Andhra Pradesh.
