Telangana: Protests against power reforms to held across the state on Sunday

People from the barber and washermen community have taken to protest against the BJP government, demanding to withdraw the power reforms. They also decided to hold protests across the state on Sunday.

Leaders from both communities met in various locations throughout the city to oppose the BJP government’s plans to install metres and eliminate subsidies on Monday. According to community leaders, the Centre was opposing subsidies to BCs involved in their hereditary occupations under the guise of power reforms.

Washermen community leaders from across the state gathered at MLC Basavaraju Saraiah’s home here. If the BJP government’s power reforms are implemented, the Telangana government’s free power to barber shops, dhobi ghats, and laundries will be discontinued, Saraiah said at the meeting.

While the State government was providing 50,000 free power metres to dhobi ghats and laundries, he pointed out that the BJP government’s power reforms would have an impact on the livelihoods of many families in the State.

Moved by the plight of washermen, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao said he had allocated Rs 200 crore for the distribution of 250 units of free power, as well as Rs 18 crore to effectively implement the scheme, and that BJP State leaders should clarify the Centre’s power reforms.

State Washermens’ Association co-convenor K Srinivas said protests against the power reforms would take place on Sunday at the village, mandal, and district levels.

The State government is providing each salon with 250 units of free power. Rasamalla Balakrishna, president of the Barber Community State Association stated. According to him, 32,000 salons in the state benefited from this initiative, facilitating the financial empowerment of community members.

He urged community members to inform every customer who came into their shop about the Centre’s plans. During the meeting, it was decided to wear black badges and deny BJP leaders haircuts in protest of the power reforms, he added.
