Telangana: Rs 1,400 cr losses incurred due to floods

The state government estimated losses from recent heavy rains in the state and the resulting floods in the Godavari river at Rs 1,400 crore on Wednesday and said it will submit a report to the Centre.

The government intends to ask the Centre for Rs 1,000 crore in immediate financial assistance to carry out relief measures. According to a press release issued by the Chief Minister’s Office on Wednesday, various departments have submitted preliminary estimates to the state government on the losses caused by the recent heavy rains and floods.

The roads and buildings department reported losses of Rs 498 crore as a result of road damage. According to the release, the panchayat raj department lost Rs 449 crore, the irrigation department lost Rs 33 crore, the municipal administration department lost Rs 379 crore, and the energy department lost Rs 7 crore.

The cost of repairing houses and evacuating people from them was estimated to be Rs 25 crore.

Meanwhile, Central teams will arrive on Thursday to assess the flood damage. According to official sources, the six-member teams will tour for two days before submitting a report to the Centre. The teams will also visit the flood-ravaged projects of Bhadrachalam, Kaleshwaram, and Kadem.

In the meantime, Special Chief Secretary, Irrigation and Command Area Development (I&CAD) Rajat Kumar stated on Wednesday that the Central government has not responded to the loss that the Polavaram backwaters will cause Telangana, as well as other issues that will arise once the project is operational.

“We have repeatedly requested that the Centre study the Polavaram backwaters issue. But it didn’t respond,” he said during a press conference here on Wednesday.

The project would not only submerge up to one lakh acres, but it would also harm crops and endanger historic sites.
