Telangana to receive 2200 additional MBBS seats, 8 new medical colleges

As a Dasara gift to the people of Telangana, the state government announced on Monday that a total of 2,200 additional medical seats will be available for admissions beginning this academic year.

Along with the medical seats, the state saw the establishment of eight new colleges.

T Harish Rao, the state health minister, stated, “We will start admissions in 8 new medical colleges from this year, which will add 1200 seats. Combined with the 1067 additional MBBS seats through 85 percent reservation in B category medical seats in private medical colleges, over 2,200 medical seats will be available from this year. This is a Dasara gift from Telangana CM Chandrashekhar Rao to MBBS aspirants in Telangana.”

85% of Category-B medical seats reserved for local students

In a major development, the Telangana government issued two GOs on Thursday regarding medical admissions, reserving 85% of Category-B MBBS and BDS seats in minority and non-minority private medical colleges for local students. The remaining 15% of seats will be available to students from across the country.

According to the Medical and Health Department’s GO 129 and GO 130, “15% of Category-B seats are open to candidates from all over the country.” The new rule guarantees that 1,068 additional Category-B MBBS seats will be available for students in the State’s 24 private medical colleges beginning this academic year. There are 3,750 seats available in 20 non-minority and four minority private colleges in the state.

Due to the lack of a reservation, students from other states have been able to obtain MBBS seats in these colleges. “Due to this, students of Telangana faced a disadvantage in their own State. They were being forced to go to countries like Ukraine, China and Russia to pursue medical education,” according to a Health Department press release.
