Telangana: TRS likely to change its name to Bharata Rashtra Samiti

According to ruling party sources, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) is likely to change its name to ‘Bharata Rashtra Samiti’ (BRS), and the state government’s welfare schemes will be showcased across the country to help it emerge as a national force.

TRS President and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is expected to unveil the party’s new name on Wednesday, which is considered auspicious in light of Vijayadasami.

The rebranding exercise, as well as the plan to reach out to people with its “Telangana good governance model,” are part of the party’s efforts to break into national politics and effectively compete with the BJP.

According to sources, the TRS general body meeting on Wednesday at ‘Telangana Bhavan,’ the party headquarters here, will pass a resolution affecting the name change.

The Election Commission would be notified of the change in accordance with the Representation of the People Act and applicable rules.

The party’s outreach initiative would focus on welfare schemes being implemented in Telangana, such as the ‘Rythu Bandhu’ support scheme for farmers and the ‘Dalit Bandhu’ support scheme for Dalits (Rs 10 lakh grant to every Dalit household to start any business or trade).

Similar schemes are not devised and implemented on a national scale, and the BJP has dubbed the welfare initiatives as “freebies.”

Electricity has not been provided in all villages across the country, they said, and all such issues would be addressed in the campaign to expose the ruling party at the Centre.

The name change would be communicated to the Election Commission via e-mail and then in person on October 6, according to sources.

In September, the party stated that “the formation of a national party and the formulation of its (national party) policies will take place very soon.” Rao, also known as KCR, recently announced that if a “non-BJP government” was elected in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, farmers across the country would receive free power.

Rao recently called for a “BJP mukt Bharat” (BJP-free India) during a meeting with his Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar, blaming the national party’s government at the Centre for the “many ills plaguing the country.”

The TRS resolved at its foundation day event in April this year that the party should play a key role in national politics in the interest of the country because the BJP is “exploiting communal sentiments” for political gain.
