Telangana TSPSC Chairman Resigns Amid Exam Irregularities

Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan accepted the resignations of Dr. B Janardhan Reddy, head of the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC), and other members on Wednesday, January 10.

The move comes after Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy regularly voiced discontent with the TSPSC’s operations under Janardhan Reddy’s tenure.

Following his discussion with Janardhan Reddy on December 11, the chief minister expressed his concern with the commission’s handling of recruitment examinations, which included issues such as question paper leaks and exam cancellations. The stolen question papers covered a variety of tests, including Assistant Engineer (AE), Group-I Preliminary, and DAO exams. Approximately 100 people, including several TSPSC personnel, were arrested in connection with the paper leak case, and the Enforcement Directorate is also investigating the situation.

Exam cancellation and postponement due to irregularities, including the failure to perform foolproof exams, became a serious issue, prompting protests by unemployed young. The recurrent setbacks with Group-I Preliminary Examinations, in particular, added to popular unhappiness and were viewed as a factor working against the Bharatiya Rashtravadi Samanata Party (BRS) government in the 2018 Assembly elections.

The reformation of TSPSC will enable the state government to choose a new board, which will then begin the process of conducting recruitment tests. The latest modifications represent a significant step toward addressing TSPSC’s issues and restoring confidence in the recruitment process.

Dr. B Janardhan Reddy, a 1996-batch IAS official, was named TSPSC chairman by the previous BRS administration on May 19, 2021. His departure, which was accepted by the governor, signals a significant shift for the commission, setting the way for reforms and improvements to the recruitment process.
