Tourism activity increases in Telangana

Domestic tourist activity has increased in the state after two years of decline since the State Tourism Development Corporation (TSTDC) registered more bookings than it did last year, with almost 80 percent occupancy in most corporate hotels.

During the two years of the Covid pandemic, the tourism sector had suffered a major setback, and the TSTDC, too, had difficulty providing salaries to its employees due to a lack of funds.

After people started travelling during the last three months, the situation improved. The inauguration of Yadadri temple and Ramappa Temple, both listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites, has been a major attraction for tourists from the State and neighbouring States.

With the increase in hotel bookings and charges associated with recreational activities, the Corporation has been able to fill its coffers. According to a senior official, the Corporation earned Rs 1.15 crore from boating at Tank Bund alone, a record.

There has also been an increase in bookings at the Harita hotels of the Corporation. During April and May this year, 8.76 lakh hotel reservations were made. Through boating facilities at various locations in the State, the Corporation earned around Rs 2.64 crore.

Over the past two months, hotel occupancy exceeded 80 per cent, with hotel bookings over 50 per cent. Yadadri, Ramappa, Bhadrachalam, Laknavaram, Nagarjunsagar, and others saw increased footfall.

U Srinivas Gupta, chairman of the Tourism Development Corporation, said that people were confined inside their homes during the Covid-19 lockdown last two years.

With travel restrictions lifting, many people are now eager to visit religious places and participate in recreational activities. There has also been a good revenue generation from the corporation’s transport division. It’s thanks to people visiting places like Tirupati and Shirdi. Boating records reveal that people were eager to participate in recreational activities, he said.
