‘Traffic Action Plan’ implemented by Hyderabad police to ensure smooth flow of traffic

With the number of vehicles on the road in the city increasing dramatically since Covid, the Hyderabad police are implementing a ‘Traffic Action Plan’ to ensure a smooth flow of traffic on the roads.

C V Anand, the Commissioner of Police in Hyderabad, stated on Thursday that the traffic police will be undertaking various initiatives for traffic management and regulation in the coming days. The police department’s higher-ups are also providing logistics and men to the traffic wing to assist them in dealing with the problem.

The city had 64,02,482 vehicles at the end of 2019, and that number had risen dramatically to 77,65,487 vehicles by August.

According to Anand, many people began to prefer personal transportation over public transportation after Covid, and “in the last two and a half years, 13,63,005 vehicles, or roughly 18%, were introduced to city roads.”

Appropriate traffic management strategies were being developed in light of the increase in vehicle volumes.

He said that more towing cranes would be deployed to keep the carriageway clear, but that quality enforcement would take precedence over quantity.

“All senior officers will focus on regulation during peak hours. The stop line discipline will be properly enforced. Strict measures will be taken against commuters who use the wrong side of the road, triple ride, improper number plates, black films, and so on,” he said.

The police will hold regular meetings with businesses, hawkers, schools, colleges, auto drivers, RTC drivers, and other stakeholders to educate them on traffic laws and parking regulations. Following the education campaigns, special enforcement drives will target repeat offenders.

Also studied and implemented will be junction development, signage boards at free lefts, providing a safe turning radius at U-turns, and adopting reversible lanes based on traffic flow. The traffic wing’s social media unit will expand digital education campaigns to reach out to more young people through awareness videos, sessions, and so on. Traffic awareness films will be created and distributed via social media, he added.
