Traffic advisory for passengers heading to Hyderabad airport

A traffic advisory was issued by the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) asking travellers to take an alternative route to the airport due to road construction.

There will be a temporary closure of the road connecting NH44 (Shamshabad) to the airport from April 14 to 22 due to construction work, the advisory states.

The traffic heading to the airport will have to make a U-turn after the underpass and take the slipway road.

Warangal airport construction to begin in Telangana

It appears that the Telangana government’s lobbying efforts are paying off after years of effort. The airport is scheduled to open by next year after beginning work in the next two to three months.

Despite its proximity to Shamshabad international airport, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GMRHIAL) opposes the opening of the airport for commercial purposes. According to sources, Warangal airport could also be used for chartered flights, including those of VVIPs, like Begumpet airport.

Warangal airport has been allotted Rs 75 crore in the state’s budget for 2022-2023. VN Bharat Reddy, director of aviation in Telangana, told TOI on Tuesday that air traffic control (ATC) and terminal building construction would begin soon at Telangana airport.

For the past five years, the government has been attempting to develop an airport in Warangal in order to attract investments to the Kakatiya Mega Textile Park (KMTP). The airport can be built on nearly 420 acres near Warangal, in Mamnoor.

As far as air connectivity is concerned, Warangal is about 150km from Hyderabad, the nearest airport, which has already been developed on 1,200 acres by the government.

GMR Group has raised objections to the government’s plan for an international airport in Warangal. According to government statements, it plans to revive an old airport at Warangal from the Nizam era that lasted until the early 1980s.

The united AP government had signed an agreement with AAI in March 2007 to upgrade the Warangal airport, but the restrictive clause prevented the project from moving forward. An industry official said it is technically not a new airport.
