TRS MPs protest against price hike

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MPs staged a protest demonstration at the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Tuesday against inflation, the failure of the Centre to control price hikes, GST, and other issues.

Several members of the party led by Nama Nageswara Rao and K Keshava Rao held placards and raised slogans against the Union Government’s policies burdening the poor and middle class.

Chevella MP G. Ranjith Reddy, speaking to reporters there later, faulted the Union Government for adjourning the two Houses every day instead of allowing discussion on issues of concern to the majority.

In relation to paddy/rice procurement, he said Union Minister for Food and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal was creating confusion among the farming community by urging them to grow paddy extensively saying that there was good international demand for rice.

According to Ranjith Reddy, the Centre has not lifted the custom milled rice from Telangana for over six weeks now, and there is uncertainty about over 90 lakh tonnes of paddy stocks.

Although Telangana had been borrowing within the limits prescribed by the Centre so far, the Centre had imposed new restrictions overnight on its borrowing.

Khammam MP said the Centre has been indifferent to the flood situation, while Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao was constantly reviewing, visiting flood-hit areas, and providing assistance. The government instead imposed GST on food items such as milk and curd, further burdening the people, he said.
