Turkey lifts state of emergency

The Turkish government has ended the nationwide state of emergency imposed following a failed coup attempt in July 2016 that killed over 250 people and wounded nearly 2,200. Under the state of emergency, Turkey dismissed over 1.5 lakh civil servants and charged 77,000 people suspected of links to US-based cleric Fethullah Gülen, who Turkey blames for the failed coup attempt.

To enact a state of emergency, the government must foresee serious indications of widespread violence which may interfere with the democratic environment or basic constitutional rights and freedoms of its citizens.

In April, the government renewed the state of emergency for the seventh time.
