UP Women Beat Odds To Win UP Panchayat Polls; Women Outnumber Men This Year

With the new changes happening in the government, the two ladies from Uttar Pradesh have fought against the odds to be elected in the panchayat polls last week.

Gita Gets Elected As Kshetra Panchayat Head 

As per the latest reports, Gita from Bahraich and Sonia from Saharanpur was elected as the Kshetra Panchayat Head. Gita is a homemaker from the Payagpur block. Her husband is an MNREGA worker and belongs to the Scheduled Caste community.

Gita has completed her intermediate and decided to try her luck in the elections to win the seat reserved for women. In a statement, she said that some of her friends and her husband encouraged her to take part in the elections. She said that now that she was won, her priority is to work for the people.

Sonia Gets Elected As Block Chief 

At the same time, Sonia from the Baliakheri block of Saharanpur won as the Block Chief. Her husband Sunil Kumar works as a sweeper, “safai” worker. Talking to the media, she revealed that it was her husband who convinced her to contest the BDC polls from ward number 55. She was initially reluctant to do so but agreed eventually.

Sonia won the BDC elections and later contested for the Block Chief and won that as well. In a statement, she said that she aims to work towards the development of the village.

“My husband and my family supported me in this journey. I aim to work for the development of the village,” she said.

Meanwhile, her husband Sunil has decided to continue his job as the “safai” worker. Sonia said that her house will still run from the salary her husband earns.

As per the sources, a total of 31,212 women have won the election for the UP Panchayat Polls. Out of these, 447 for block pramukh and 42 for the post of district panchayat chairperson in the panchayat elections this year, exceeding the quota of one-third seats allocated for them.
