US Faces Increased Cases Of Respiratory Virus Ahead of School Reopen; Reports

With many of the restrictions uplifted across the United States of America, the country has seen a sudden rise in the case of a respiratory virus known as the respiratory syncytial virus or RSV. It is a highly contagious, flu-like illness that mainly affects children and older adults.

Covid Makes It Way Back To US Hospitals

As per the latest reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that instances of RSV have risen slowly since early June, with a much more noteworthy spike in the previous month, the New York Times detailed. RSV prompts runny nose, hacking, wheezing and fever. It regularly starts to spread in the fall, making the late spring spike uncommon.

“After numerous long periods of nothing or few pediatric Covid cases, we are seeing babies, kids and teens with Covid emptying once again into the medical clinic, increasingly more every day,” Dr Heather Haq, a pediatrician at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston wrote in a progression of posts on Twitter.

Haq added that patients have gone in age from about fourteen days to 17 years of age, incorporating some with Covid pneumonia.

In the tweet, he said that we are toward the front of a colossal Covid flood. We are currently having winter-level patient volumes of intensely sick babies/little children with RSV, and I stress that we will run out of beds and staff to deal with the flood upon the flood.

US Schools To Reopen Soon

In the past two weeks, the US has seen a 148 percent rise in new infections. And the hospitalisations have also increased by 73 percent. Amidst this, the schools across the country are set to reopen soon. This has concerned the health officials as it would increase the risk of children being infected.

Similar spike in RSV cases has been seen in Florida where infections “were above those seen at this time in the past years,” according to a surveillance report of the virus.
