Waqf Property Controversy in Telangana

Telangana’s KCR government has come under fire for allegedly failing to protect waqf properties in the state, despite earlier vows to empower the Waqf Board judicial powers and defend these holdings. Several incidents of illegal possession of waqf lands by members of the ruling party, including ministers and MLAs, have come to light, raising worries about the Chief Minister’s lack of action.

According to reports, encroachment on substantial waqf lands has occurred in districts like as Mahbubnagar and Karimnagar. Furthermore, some 13 acres of waqf land in Greater Hyderabad’s Maheshwaram neighborhood are already under unlawful possession, with the remaining half being monitored by a local MLA.

In Maheshwaram, the contested area comprises an Eidgah, a graveyard, and Ashoor Khana, all of which are registered as waqf properties with the Waqf Board. Since 2016, the local governing committee has been battling illegal occupation in waqf tribunals. Despite efforts to reclaim the land and ongoing government development on a piece of the area, the case is still pending in the tribunal.

During committee meetings, Sabita Indra Reddy allegedly attempted to persuade local Muslims to drop their complaint from the Waqf Tribunal by offering an alternative piece of land in return for the waqf land. Local Muslims, on the other hand, expressed their displeasure with the state minister’s conduct and requested that their claim be pursued in the Waqf Tribunal.

Among the charges is a video of Education Minister Sabita Indra Reddy encouraging Muslims to give up their claims on waqf properties in exchange for alternative land.

The situation has caused popular outrage, and questions have been raised regarding the government’s commitment to safeguarding waqf holdings and granting the Waqf Board judicial authority. As the debate rages on, the fate of these precious waqf lands remains uncertain, and the state remains concerned about the preservation of waqf estates.
